And My First Trick In Months Will Be...Deleted Octopus Scene From The Goonies

Every once in awhile I remember scenes from movies that never made the final cut but were part of the theatrical release. One of the "lost scenes" that has been haunting me for years was the Octopus scene from the Goonies. You see, I'm pretty fuckin' old, at least old enough to have seen The Goonies opening weekend, and the weekend after that, so on and so forth. As a child of the 80's, I probably watched The Goonies 6 to 8 times while it was in the theaters. Years later, after losing interest in the movies of my childhood to make room for sex, drugs, and other teenage interests, I found myself watching the Goonies on VHS for the first time in almost 10 years. Like a decade before, I loved the shit out of that flick but I knew something was missing. Over the years I would debate with my peers on whether they remembered an octopus or not. Most of the time I would just get the "your such a fuckin' geek" look, but most who shared the love would agree there was definitely something missing in the VHS cut.

And then, in the year 2000, the DVD was released, and the age-old question was answered. Unfortunately, I don't think it ever made a the DVD cut, but it was included in the deleted scenes, and I was finally at peace.

So here I bring you that very deleted scene that I have wasted 100's of hours of my life talking about.

  1. I had no idea about this. I was not lucky enough to see THE GOONIES during its theater run, only on cable after. So what's your call--should it have been deleted? Seems a bit like overkill to me, although the I think the scene itself is cool.

  2. i always thought it was a cool scene when I was younger, but when I think about it I realize that it's kind of ridiculous. Not that the rest of the movie is realistic, mind you, but the octo-scene was a bit over the top.

  4. Is it the lame music from the 80's the culprit in the death of the pus? Really like your blog man never knew that you knew so much about stuff I too am into- but probably not as in depth as you, I blame it on being a latch key kid and years or cannabis smoke. loved the goonies.

  5. I saw The Goonies three times at the movies when I was a kid, and the octopus scene was definitely not in it when I saw it.

I remember that it was in the novelization and in the Topps card series, so I was quite annoyed that this scene was not in the movie. (I was also annoyed that there was not a scene where they ride across an underground lake on a raft in pitch darkness while talking about what scares them the most, and then Mouth retells The Monkey's Paw. That scene was the shit in the novelization.)

I can't find any information about this scene appearing in theatrical cuts of the movie, but I can find information on it being cut out before release and later re-added for some tv versions to make up for censored scenes.

Memory can be pretty funny - are you really sure that you saw the scene at the movies?

  6. Like you, my memory is a bit foggy, Pearce. I remember an octopus scene and I was sure it was the theatrical release. I'm pretty sure that the Goonies, like ET and other movies of this era, had multiple theatrical releases before VHS availability. Maybe I'm confusing it with the Disney Channel release, but I don't think so.
